If your referring too a wireless connection, then yes.
A wired connection will always be better in terms of the "reliability" and "speed" of the connection.

Depending on how far you are from your router, your actual internet speed will differ.

Not true. I used to think the same, but if you have a Wireless N router (draft 2.0), it will rival your wired speeds. Also, the adapter and router play a small part, if one or both of them are terrible, you'll probably drop connections a lot and get a bad signal strength.
