Optic/Envy GameStop 2011 Champions!

For those who don't know, the GameStop Black Ops finals were last night in LA at the House of Blues. Team finals were for both xbox and ps3 with $26,000 on the line (gametype domination), with a FFA final on xbox as well with $4,000 up for grabs. Many of gamings top names were there including, hastr0, Merk, Bigtymer, StainV, Moho, ASSASS1N, chxppy, revan, proofy, eg0, trumpf, hutch, seananners and also JD2020.

The first semi- final match Team FeaR played first against Scary Kids Scaring Kids. It was a close contest with FeaR losing one map, but still pulled out the win 2-1.

Optic/Envy faced off against Team Murda during their semi-final match, and just absolutely destroyed Murda to the point of virtual murder. It was obvious OE was just too strong, to the point where Hastr0 pulled out the L96 and pulled off a wicked no scope on Summit. OE shut out Murda 2-0

The final was now set, FeaR (Moho, ASSASS1N, Chxppy, Revan) vs Optic/Envy (Hastr0, StainV, Merk, BigTymer). With Eg0 nV and Trumpf hosting the live webcast, it was obvious who they were rooting for, but it was really any ones game and the $13k could have gone either of these elite teams.

OE won the first map Villa on both sides for a total score of 182-124. OE had their adrenaline flowing and it showed when Merk shouted, "You're so bad!" after a kill against Moho (correct me if it was another FeaR memeber).

Map two was Summit and this is when FeaR had to step up if they wanted to win the prize money and bragging rights. It was game time and FeaR's opportunity was slipping with OE taking control of two flags early in the match, but after a minute into the match Moho gets clutch quad-nade kill. This was the game changer as FeaR gained control of the map and team morale, allowing them to hold off OE the rest of the round. FeaR won both sides of the map for a total of 166-120.

The third and final map was set, Firing Range, and the championship was for the taking by either team. FeaR took the two cap lead as soon as the match began, and confidence was on their side. But OE didn't hesitate and kept pushing for map control, despite being dominated by a triple cap at the 3:30min mark. OE regained their composure and quickly muscled their way out of the trip-cap by capping two flags and chipping away at FeaRs lead. At the end of the 4min round OE pulled out an impressive win of 81-68.

Now it was time for a spawn flip and the start of round 2. The match was a tug-of-war between two incredible teams filled with some of pro-gaming's top names, and it came down to the wire by not only skill, but heart breaking team kills. Triple caps were had by both teams and neither would allow to be spawn trapped on the bottom of the map. It was absolute genius gameplay and strategy by both teams to out maneuver each other. With one minute left in the match, OE held a lead of 63-49 and their crown was less than a minute away, but FeaR, despite the emotion and sweat, pulled out a last minute 3 cap and it looked like the match would go into over time. OE shifts into overdrive and cap one flag near 30sec to the moment of truth, then stage an all out assault for B flag and capture it during, literally, the final few seconds of the map to tie it 74-74, therefore giving the map win, crown, and $13,000 to Optic/Envy Gaming for a total tally of 155-142.

This tournament was a great inauguration for Black Ops on the competitive scene and is just a taste of the great games that will certainly take place during the MLG 2011 season. So keep your eyes peeled for more last second wins and adrenaline pumping game play.

CLIFF NOTES:

Both teams are bad. Everyone on them needs to get a life.

I don't understand why you would waste so much time playing video games.

13 grand is why they would "waste" so much time. Thats a pretty chunk of change for just movingyour thumbs around.

It is! GameStop has been hosting COD tourneys for a couple years now. They only hold one per title release, but they normally go all out paying for just about everything. I was lucky enough to make it to the WaW finals and we played on the U.S.S. Midway 0_0
